Dead Island Introduces a Black Female Character

Dead Island is less than a month away and I’m so stoked! I haven’t really been playing Black Ops nowadays and in between my packing (remember, I’m moving again,) I’ve just been playing the Sims 3 and staying up-to-date on Dead Island. I wish I could just speed up the time and be standing in line at Gamestop, picking up my pre-order copy of Dead Island. Yet, I don’t have the power to speed up time. If you know of anybody that does, let me know! lol

Dead Island looks like it’s going to be a great zombie slashing game. It’s probably great for those days when everyone is pissing you off and you just want to get lost in a game for hours. If I’ve had a horrible day, then I’ll hop on Black Ops and at least get some of my anger out on the zombies. But that gets old afterwhile, so you can understand why I’m so anxious to play Dead Island.

It’s not just about shooting and slashing zombies, there is an actual story at hand. The RPG elements of the game look promising and the chose of characters is bond to make an even better experience. Characters are an important aspect of video games and the story at hand. I like just shooting and dishing out major damage, but it’s nice to have a story that I can grasp onto.

The characters in the game look great so far, but the story just got even better; they’ve introduced a fourth female character and get this, she’s a sistah. You heard it, the fourth character to choose from on Dead Island is a Black girl named Purna. Not only is she representing for the brown skin women, she has a pretty lethal background that will make the story even more interesting.

Purna is a cop turned bodyguard who left her career in law and enforcement after murdering a child molester. The fact she murdered him was a major issue due to his connections and status of being apart of the elite and wealthy, so she wasn’t praised for her “good” deed.

The character art looks pretty sweet and the in game footage of her doesn’t look half bad either. Depending upon her skill-set (one of the  RPG elements of the game,) I will probably make her my character of choice. I always thought it would be cool to have another strong Black female character in a video game and with a name like Purna, sounds like she is not one to mess with.

From the gameplay footage I’ve seen thus far, Dead Island looks pretty awesome! Like most games I’m sure it will have it’s faults and those hard core game geeks that will give it less than satisfactory reviews, but that doesn’t phase me. Dead Island isn’t just another Left 4 Dead zombie slashing game, it relies more on those RPG elements that make videogames more fun to play. I like to feel as though I actually have decisions to make and playing RPG games places me in that role. You never know, Dead Island could be good practice to cultivate your survival skills and be prepared for the day zombies attack. I’m just saying, it could happen!

Dead Island Finally Shows Us Some Gameplay!

The first trailer for Dead Island, hands down the best trailer of 2011.

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post about a new zombie game coming out called Dead Island. The trailer above was the first introduction to the game and it made gamers anxious for information. We began asking questions concerning it’s release date, platforms, and what actual gameplay looked like. We weren’t give much information, especially considering that the game has been in works for 5 years and finally has a publisher.

With E3 right around the corner and so many great new games coming out, Techland has released a new gameplay video for those gamers anxious to get their hands on this zombie frenzy. This game goes beyond Left 4 Dead, a game where you can spend hours slashing away at zombies with your friends. Dead Island is about truly surviving, gaining skills, and even playing co-op with your friend through the actual story mode. The game looks promising and the graphics are pretty good for a zombie game on a tropical island.

Check out the game play footage below and stayed tuned for more concerning this game. I’m looking forward to playing it and seeing what else they will showcase at E3. So many good games coming out this year and so many good movies coming out this summer, I can’t wait!! For now I’ll just have to deal with the Youtube teasers and trailers, it’s better than nothing!

Tropical Zombies, What More Could You Ask For?

So there has been buzz about this game “Dead Island” since 2007, but in the past year it has finally been picked up by a publisher. Publisher Deep Silver and developer Techland are currently working on this zombie first person slasher/RPG game expected to be released sometime in August 2011 on Ps3, 360, and PC.

The game focuses on an outbreak at the Royal Palms Resort on a fictional island named Banoi in Papa New Guinea. You play as one of the guest vacationing at the resort and are unprepared for a mysterious zombie outbreak on the island. You don’t have zombie fighting skills or a zombie guide, but as you encounter more zombies you become more experienced. The cool thing about Dead Island, is the lack of weapon’s you’d find in most action games. High tech weapons and machine guns, are replaced with conventional items that you’d rely on in real life. Crobars, glass bottles, a few pistols, knives, broomsticks, axes, and other melee weapons are scattered around the island waiting to be discovered.

If you don’t feel like going on a scavenger hunt alone, then have one of your friends pick up a controller. Dead Island does come with a 4 player co-op, that seamlessly allows characters to join in the story and leave when they please. As you progress throughout the story and attempt to escape the island with the few other tourists who remained immune to the outbreak, you will also discover the mysterious cause behind the zombie madness. The developers have been keeping a lot of information on the hush, but they did admit there will be a skill level tree, in which characters can gain more abilities along the way and gain access to special options.

While information concerning this open-world zombie horror game has been kept on the down low, TechLand and Deep Silver had released a trailer that has been creating buzz for months. No one is quite sure if the game will live up to the standards of the trailer, especially considering the lack of an official gameplay trailer, but Dead Island’s official trailer can easily be the best visually stunning trailer of 2011. The trailer is a visually compelling story that is played backwards. All the events are played in rewind, with a beautiful classical music component. If the gameplay isn’t as visually stunning, at least the trailer looks good!

Nobody knows for sure what the gameplay looks like yet, but some screenshots have been promising. The screenshots show some gruesome zombies surrounding Xian Mei, an attractive employee at the Royal Palms Resort. Xian and rapper Sam B, who is on vacation at the resort, are the only two characters released so far that have a face to match the name. The other characters Logan and Purna have yet to be revealed, but I’m sure in the few months we will see more from Dead Island.

Dead Island sounds like a promising zombie game that goes beyond the hack and slash of Left 4 Dead and incorporates an open world platform, first person slashing, scavenger hunting, and other elements of RPGs. If you haven’t seen the trailer for Dead Island, then be sure to watch it again…and then watch it again. It’s that good.
