Socio-Political Groovin’ | VACATIONLAND #7 – Body Move Skonky

Here is some socio-political groovin’ from VACATIONLAND. It’s Mix #7 and it’s called “Body Move Skonky.”

So sit back and get ready for a cool introduction with Romney and Obama, and hints of nostalgia thrown throughout the mix.

Once again, here’s the music. :)

Slam Poet Drew Imagination Shows Us ‘A Guide to Oppression’ [Beats by Code-E-Keyz & Psy Fidelity]

There is so much turmoil right now in the political and social atmosphere. It seems every single day something controversial is brewing, especially considering the current election and the conflicting ideas that are being presented (primarily ideas from the GOP.) I’m not one to go deep into political conversations and posts, but I must admit that the actions and rhetoric of the GOP have been quite appalling.

Whether you’re a democrat, republican, or independent, one thing I’m sure we can all somewhat agree on is that we need to ensure a level of equality throughout humanity. But of course, the driving force behind politics and social issues always seemed to be geared towards agendas (of power and money), instead of enacting actual solution to fix problems. Yet, at least when it comes to focusing on the issues at hand, I will say that thus far Obama has done a great job at cleaning up the shit that Bush left behind, and he is focused on the issues. Whereas, the GOP and Romney just keep getting sidetracked by frivolous issues (birth certificate bullshit, name calling, hints of racism) and then end up throwing in negative rhetoric that offends an array of individuals from various backgrounds (minorities and members of the LGBT community especially.)

There isn’t one right way in approaching the topic without causing controversy, but one of the most impressive approaches to social issues and politics is the art of spoken word. I’ve always been amazed by the creative deep conscious that comes across in spoken word, and I was quite pleased when a slam poet by the name of Drew Imagination contacted me.

It’s not everyday that you’d say “Hey, have you heard of that slam poet from Honolulu?” But, today is the day in which I’m going to say, “Hey, have you heard of Drew Imagination? He’s a slam poet from Honolulu, and he touches on a lot of serious issues in his piece titled “Guide to Oppression.”

The production is by Code-E-Keyz and Psy Fidelity, and the piece is a thought provoking dosage of thoughts that discuss the reality of social and political oppression. It truly is food for thought.

Listen to the piece below. If you’d like to hear more spoken word by Drew Imagination, then I highly recommend you visit his bandcamp page.

‘Call Me Maybe’ | Covers by Tay Zonday and The Roots + Jimmy Fallon + Jepsen [Videos]

To be honest, at first I really hated the song. I just couldn’t stand hearing it on the radio and I surely couldn’t stand the annoying simplicity of the lyrics. But then (perhaps invasion of the body-snatchers took place,) the song began to grow on me. “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen somehow got stuck in my head and I realized that yes, even though it’s such a cheesy pop song, it’s actually kind of cute.

It’s cuteness (or perhaps annoying-ness) has become somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon. Dudes are making business cards and having it say “Call me, maybe.” It’s the new way of attempting to pick up girls. SMH. And oh, it’s so popular that heck, President Obama was even singing it. Then Jimmy Fallon and The Roots teamed up with Jepsen to do a version of the song using only kids musical instruments.

And now, The “Chocolate Rain” dude, Tay Zonday, did a cover of the song. Let’s just say that his version isn’t cute…more like awkwardly creepy, yet funny. I don’t anyone will be wanting to “call him” after watching him sing the song. Call him…maybe? Um, no. More like lose his number. lol. Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

Anyways, watch the covers below. Are y’all tired of this song yet? Or do you find yourself randomly singing it while waiting for your latte?

WHCD | Pres. Obama & Jimmy Kimmel Deliver a Heavy Dosage of Laughter [Full Speeches]

So, I’m not really big on politics. Yeah, I watch the news and I typically have a general awareness of what’s going on, but I don’t live and breathe the logistics of politics. It’s just never been my cup of tea. As long as whoever is in charge is trying to improve our society, promote some level of equality, and is decently environmentally conscious, then that’s typically all I’m usually concerned with.

But it’s hard to avoid political enthusiasts and conversations of politics, especially due to my geographic location. Living in close proximity to Washington, D.C. I’m always encountering young professionals who are so passionate about politics (I usually try to avoid those lengthy conversations.) I’d rather discuss art, music, and perhaps sociocultural issues, but I refrain from political jargon. Yet, that doesn’t mean I’m immune to the desire to tune in to the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Every year I end up watching the White House Correspondents Dinner (WHDC.) Usually I tune in to see the “who’s who” and of course, the speeches given by the president. Luckily, we have a president in office who is actually quite funny (even if the jokes are written by someone else.) President Obama is quite the charismatic and humorous guy. He  killed it last year at the WHDC, so I knew this year was going to be an even more hilarious feat. And I was right! Obama was pretty funny last night!

I really liked how they set up his speech. It all began with him walking off stage and then making it seem as though he accidentally left his mic on. So the crowd got to listen to Obama crack some jokes and express his thoughts, while making it appear as if he didn’t know the mic was on. It was classic! Then of course, he came out on stage and rocked the crowd with his jokes. He even joked a little to Newt Gingrich (who was in the audience,) and he told him that there was still time to get in the game. Newt himself had to even laugh, even if he wasn’t the biggest Obama supporter.

Following a round of great jokes and of course, commentary from Obama, Jimmy Kimmel then came on stage and did his thing. I was waiting for him to mention the obvious thing that apparently nobody was going to address; why the hell was Kim Kardashian at the dinner? She came with Lindsey Lohan and both of them just seemed so out of place. George Clooney’s presence and even the cast of Modern Family (Jimmy made fun of Sofia Vergara’s cleavage and the Colombian secret service scandal) seemed appropriate, but I was just shaking my head that Kim was there. Sorry, but yeah, I just don’t like her. She’s famous for what? Having a sex tape, and it wasn’t even that good. LOL. So yeah, I’m glad Jimmy at least poked fun at her.

Jimmy’s entire speech was pretty hilarious, and he truly did a kick-ass job! I could sit here and mention all my favorite jokes, but honestly I loved every moment of it. So instead of sitting here breaking everything down, I’d rather have you engage in the laughter and watch Jimmy’s speech below, as well as President Obama’s hilarious speech.

I hope you like both of the speeches just as I did. :)

Awesomesauce | Barack Obama ‘Sexy & I Know It’ Mashup Video

Whether you’re an Obama supporter or not, one thing that we can all hopefully agree on is that our President can sing, I mean he can saaaaang!

America had the opportunity to hear him sing a snippet of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” back in January at the Apollo. Since then, it’s been no surprise that every now and then you’ll catch President Obama wailing out a tune.

He has yet to officially sing LMFAO’s hit song “Sexy & I Know It,” but on YouTube decided to do yet another mashup of the President, resulting in an awesome rendition of President Obama singing “Sexy & I Know It.”

has great timing when it comes to creating his mashup, and it’s just as good, if not better, then his Obama Mashup of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” That video easily got millions a view when it was first uploaded, so it won’t be too long before this video is getting passed all around the Web and becoming yet another popular viral video.

Watch Obama “sing” to LMFAO’s “Sexy & I Know It” below.

If you haven’t seen Obama “sing” Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” then watch that video as well. It’s awesomesauce!

Awesomesauce | The Return of Baracka Flacka Flames

My family is pretty silly, but I will admit that out of myself, my mom, and my brother, my dad tends to be the one sane member. He’s just this down to earth intellectual Princeton Alumni that is constantly reading, watching the news, and researching fascinating facts regarding science, history, and politics. While the three of us (mom, brother, & me) are usually cracking up at some crude humor, he is often found reading a book or studying.

Even though my dad is so intellectual and “conservative” in comparison to the rest of us, he does have this hilarious moments that he just can’t help but laugh at. My dad is such a fun guy to hang around though, but certain things are just too crude and not funny in his opinion. But then there are things I’ll show him or we’ll see on television that will crack him up. Usually it’s some lighthearted comedy, but when it comes to Baracka Flacka Flames, my dad laughs himself into a coma!

Baracka Flacka Flames (sometimes written as Baracka Flocka Flame) is hands down the hilarious Obama impersonator I’ve seen throughout President Obama’s term. Yes, there have been a lot of people that have tried to portray Obama and his mannerisms, but Baracka Flacka Flames not only impersonates Obama, but he makes him so gangsta!

He did a great job with “Head of the State,” but now Baracka Flacka Flames is back with a new video “I Run the Military.” Some people tend to find this video offensive, but I think it’s quite hilarious! It’s not like he’s sitting there bashing the President or anything, he’s just showing us how Black President Obama really is. Basically Baracka Flacka Flames is Obama’s alter ego, and he’s married to a Michelle that is straight up from da hood! LOL she be mean muggin’ so hard in videos…man, it’s kind of scary!

“I Run the Military” is a video that essentially addresses the current political climate and what will happen in 2012 with the election. Baracka Flacka Flames addresses all his haterz and lets them know that “I Run the Military.” Enough said. At the end of the day, whether your a republican or democrat (I don’t get off into politics, but I lean more towards the liberal side) I’ve got to at least admit that he’s doing the best job he can to clean up a colossal mess that was left behind by the last administration. I’m just saying, it’s not all his fault so give the dude a break or else he will have to turn on his alter ego Baracka Flacka Flames and tell it like it really is.

Just because this video is so hilarious, I’m going to have to post “Head of the State” as well.
