Music has the ability to transcend language barriers. You don’t have to understand a language to appreciate the organic talent and raw emotion that can drive the vocal chords and instrumentation.
The universal understanding of music and ultimate appreciation is what compelled me to fall in love with the sounds of Granell. I don’t speak Portuguese (the official language of Brazil) but I can still appreciate the musicianship of Granell.
Granell is a band (often referred to as Banda Granell) from Brazil. The band has a pure indie sound which can be attributed to the lead vocals & guitar work of Enio Torres, the drumming of Lucas Medina, and the bass guitar rifts by Josué Torres. Together, the members of Granell have made it their mission to have their music reach the masses, which includes their recent recognition by MTV UK.
Even though I’m a newbie to the sounds of Granell, it doesn’t mean they are new on the music scene. The trio has actually been hitting the road since 2003 and their band became popular in 2006 with their song “Pra você” (For you). That song alone was quite a huge success throughout the Brazilian market; a market heavily saturated with samba.
I recently had the pleasure of checking out Granell’s latest single, “Se decide”. Albeit in another language, it’s still such a great song that I can totally find myself grooving to. Luckily the video has subtitle for fans who may not be familiar with the language, but aside from the vocals, the overall musicianship of the song alone is more than enough to please the ears. Great song!
Banda Granell has the potential to continue reaching fans worldwide via the Internet and with their shows. I can honestly say that I’m definitely a new fan of Granell. I had always dreamed of visiting Brazil and exploring the culture, so it’s nice to actually run across indie rock music from Brazil that is driven by such sincerity and pure musicianship.

It seems like all my favorite indie artists come from Australia. Little Red, Eskimo Boy, Empire of the Sun, & Miami Horror. All of those bands have this really cool indie sound, and each of them hail from some part of Australia. Sadly, I haven’t been to Australia yet, but apparently there is something about that continent that inspires the production of such organic music.![]()
Not only does Australia have a pretty good indie rock/alternative scene, but many of their artists have a nice niche for producing dance & electro tracks. A duo that seems to have a knack for crafting a good track is Parachute Youth. They hail from Australia, but the production for their latest track “Can’t Get Better Than This” took place in the city of lights, Paris. It’s not the usual dance music you’d hear pumping in the club, but it’s more of a chill dance sound with this natural/organic vibe. Yet, you still can dance & chill out to it, it’s really dependent upon your mode.
I will admit, I’m late on finally seeing the video for this track (apparently I’m not the only one, a lot of blogs are finally just posting this video.) The video for the chill electro track “Can’t Get Better Than This” looks as if it was filmed somewhere in Australia. It features this beautiful young Black boys racing on these motorcycles (nothing fancy, but still cool.) The vibe of the song infused with the visuals created such a nice combination. It’s the perfect video for such an organic song.
Peep the visuals below, and be sure to visit Parachute Youth’s Official Facebook.

Awhile back I wrote a blog post about a London indie band named The Thirst. The band has been making quite a name for themselves over in London, but I was first intrigued by their artistic vibe, as well as their unique sound. Not only do they have this sexy artistic vibe, but they are also extremely talented.
I don’t hear much about The Thirst when I read a majority of blogs based in America, but every time I read http://www.soulculture.co.uk I’m always amazed by the amazing amount of music I’m not hearing about or seeing on other blogs. They just seem to always post the best in unique music, so when I saw the Bakery Boys new video “Up & Down Girl” featuring The Thirst, I knew I had to post it.
The video has a nice soulful vibe, and it’s nice to see The Thirst featured on such a soulful tune. I love their indie rock music, but they’ve also go a knack for the more sensual side of R&B delight….
