Are you looking for a dosage of thriller/sci-fi “monsters on the leash” vibe? Then you might seriously want to consider checking out the latest (even though it came out 3 months ago) short film to take the Web by storm. Cost of Living.
Cost of Living is this awesome short film that tells the story of two security guards fighting off monsters that their company has created. Apparently the monsters are very tough, but you don’t need me to tell you; the woman comes over the PA & says “Alpha team has perished.” Woah, using the word “perish” really means the situation is uber serious.I mean think about it, how often do you refer to someone dying using the word perish unless it was awfully tragic. But as one of the signs say in the film, “This company has worked 28 days without accident.” Apparently that must be a record. Monsters breaking out of their cages happens all the time, but at least it’s been 28 days since the last catastrophe. And I bet they chose “28 days” to reference the zombie movie 28 Days Later.
You actually never see any zombies, but it’s still a great action packed short film. There may not be a lot of characters in this film, but that is what makes it great. You get to hear the banter between the two main security guards, and you get this vibe that terror can take place at any moment. The film stars Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Bret Harrison (Reaper, Breaking In), and it’s one of those short films you watch with the anticipation of it becoming a feature length film. I’m surprised they were able to pack so much sci-fi action into 9-minutes, but it all came together pretty well.
If you love sci-fi & thrillers, then this short film is surely one you’ll want to watch. Do you think it has potential to be a feature length film? Feel free to chime in with your thoughts.
