Music has the ability to transcend language barriers. You don’t have to understand a language to appreciate the organic talent and raw emotion that can drive the vocal chords and instrumentation.
The universal understanding of music and ultimate appreciation is what compelled me to fall in love with the sounds of Granell. I don’t speak Portuguese (the official language of Brazil) but I can still appreciate the musicianship of Granell.
Granell is a band (often referred to as Banda Granell) from Brazil. The band has a pure indie sound which can be attributed to the lead vocals & guitar work of Enio Torres, the drumming of Lucas Medina, and the bass guitar rifts by Josué Torres. Together, the members of Granell have made it their mission to have their music reach the masses, which includes their recent recognition by MTV UK.
Even though I’m a newbie to the sounds of Granell, it doesn’t mean they are new on the music scene. The trio has actually been hitting the road since 2003 and their band became popular in 2006 with their song “Pra você” (For you). That song alone was quite a huge success throughout the Brazilian market; a market heavily saturated with samba.
I recently had the pleasure of checking out Granell’s latest single, “Se decide”. Albeit in another language, it’s still such a great song that I can totally find myself grooving to. Luckily the video has subtitle for fans who may not be familiar with the language, but aside from the vocals, the overall musicianship of the song alone is more than enough to please the ears. Great song!
Banda Granell has the potential to continue reaching fans worldwide via the Internet and with their shows. I can honestly say that I’m definitely a new fan of Granell. I had always dreamed of visiting Brazil and exploring the culture, so it’s nice to actually run across indie rock music from Brazil that is driven by such sincerity and pure musicianship.

I used to always tell myself that one day I was going to fall in love with a Black guy from London that has crazy hair and this amazing artistic style. I’m so serious. I used to daydream about moving off to London, getting immersed in the music scene, and meeting this artsy guy with a name like Felix. He’d be a member of some cool band, and on the side he’d paint massive works of arts on canvas lying around his industrial loft. Ah, too bad that’s just a dream….
I’ve got a weakness for artistic men(duh, because I’m extremely artistic) that express themselves through music or art. A majority of the successful relationships I’ve had have been with guys that were artists, skaters, musicians, and technology geeks. But I’ve yet to madly fall in love and have a long term relationship with a guy that could easily be a member of an awesome funk/rock band called The Thirst.
The Thirst is a funky rock band from London that is made up of four artsy guys that have a style of their own, and a unique sound that makes their free downloadable EP Laugh With Sinners so popular in the indie music circuit. The band has been making quite a name for themselves over in the UK. Many have said that their shows are perhaps the best amongst the indie bands that are currently hitting the UK scene.
Sadly, I don’t live in London or have access to hopping a flight and going over there anytime soon. I’d probably go insane if I saw one of their shows live. I told you, artistic men with crazy hairstyles are my weakness. And if they don’t have a big fro or zany hairstyle, then the fact they express themselves to the fullest in the arts is still a major plus. Guys in business suits are fine and all, but at the end of the day I still
love a creative soul. If he happens to have a diverse taste in music, fashion, and cuisine, then sign me up for a relationship. The Thirst is a band that has good music, but the guys are weirdly hot. But the most important thing is that their music is really really good, like uber good.
The band’s latest video “Set it Alight” just debuted and it has the guys showing off their avant-garde artistic expression, while performing an energetic track that gives you a sense of The Thirst and their funk-rock fusion. It’s really hard not to like this song, unless you’re just totally immune to good music. The song has the right balance of rock and funk, without going overboard in either direction. It’s just right.
Check out the video below and be sure to download your free copy of their EP Laugh With Sinners.

Did you happen to see Neon Indian and their spectacular performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this week? Well if you missed it, then you need to get a DVR and start recording Late Night with Jimmy Fallon; he’s got great live music by the Roots, he is funny, and the music guests never cease to amaze.
Jimmy doesn’t just put the widely successful bands and artists on his show. Yes, the musicians are successful but they might not be on every music channel and have their names circulated in the mainstream media 24/7. Each time I watch his show, I’m always being introduced to a band I might have never heard of before. His show is the main reason why I fell in love with the Sheepdogs and their 60s folk/rock sound.
Jimmy Fallon’s show is also another reason why I took the time and started listening to Neon Indian’s music. Their performance on the show had me dancing in front of the television, I was in some type of magical trance. It could have easily blamed it on the sex appeal of Neon Indian’s singer and composer Alan Polomo, but it was the music that overpowered me.
He performed “Polish Girl,” off his latest album Era Extraña. The album has been creating quite the buzz the past few days due to the 23-year old Texan’s ability to compose majestic psychedelic chillwave music. I still need to go pick up the album and give the other songs a listen, but from what I’ve heard so far from Neon Indian; their music is simply put, good music. I’m a sucker for that chillwave vibe infused with some psychedelic abstract exploration. Their live performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon incorporated light painting and in the video for “Polish Girl,” Neon Indian continues to play with light painting in order to tell a story of a “disjointed personal journey.” It’s an abstract video with an awesome chill wave-pop-psychedelic rhythm.
