Boy, today has been an adventure. I would have posted this SNL post earlier, but I had to go with my mom to take the rental car back, then catch the bus back home. As usual there are always some interesting characters on the bus, so I just sort of zoned out and kept thinking about the skits from last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
The episode was hosted by Katy Perry and the skits were pretty funny. I’m a fan of Katy Perry, so I was looking forward to seeing what skits she would be apart of. Wendell Wendy Williams always talks about Katy Perry and how she needs a better husband than Russell Brand, but I think they make a cool couple. I personally like Russell Brand and his dangerously skinny jeans. Seriously, he is the only guy in the world who can rock a skinny-leg-suit. A lot of men can pull off skinny jeans, but nobody dares wear them like the way Russell Brand does. I like it. I don’t think he’s cute at all, but I think him and Katy Perry make an adorable/weird couple.
He didn’t stop by last night, but that just left more room for Katy to do her thing. Some of the skits she was apart of were extremely dull, but the Best Friends digital short was hilarious! It took a basic concept of being best friends to a sick and twisted level; gotta love the versatility of the SNL writers. The digital short was perfect for the holiday season and the bonding of family/friends, but I will say the New Years Eve Movie Sequel was right on time. The movie just came out, so you know SNL had to make fun of it and put a spin on it; instead of a traditional years eve movie, it’s now time for New Years Eve Apocalypse. Apparently the world might end in 2012, so the sequel should be about the end of the world instead of finding love and enjoying New Years Eve. The SNL trailer was the perfect opportunity to mock a lot of actors, so be sure to check it out for some great celebrity impersonations.
SNL has a great cast that does some solid impersonations, but I have to say that Kenan’s Al Sharpton impersonation has me almost laughing myself into a coma. Have you ever watched Politics Nation with Al Sharpton? Well, if you haven’t, then you won’t understand how hilarious and dead on Kenan’s parody was. Al Sharpton always appears lost in his interviews and he never knows where the camera is. On top of that he always gets words and names wrong, which is just such a treat to watch. He doesn’t buckle under pressure, he just seems oblivious to the mistakes. Words can really describe, so just watch the parody.
There were some other great segments in the show that caught my attention, including the visit with The Queen. They’ve done that skit in the past but it was nice to see them bring it back. My mom always laughs so hard at the outlandish portrayal of the Queen, SNL makes the Queen look so gangsta and rude! Haha it just makes you wonder what happens behind closed doors and how people actually act, especially the beloved Queen of England. Hmm….how does she really act? Very curious. That skit was funny, as well as the J-Pop skit. You know how sometimes Americans tend to take on Japanese cultures but only the stereotypes and not the full essence of that culture. Well, that’s what this J-Pop skit is all about. Young kids wishing they were Japanese and trying to immerse themselves in the culture. It’s a mess…
But I will say I learned one thing while watching Saturday Night Live, man, Alec Baldwin is a g! You’ve probably heard he got in trouble for texting on a plane last week and got upset, slammed the bathroom door, and the pilot heard it, which got him banned from American Airlines. Well he decided to come on SNL and make an appearance during Weekend Update. He pretended to be the pilot and totally mocked the situation. He was straight up a g about it. It was so wrong, but so right! Cocky, of course. Funny, hell yeah! So you’ve got to check that segment out as well. And is Words with Friends really that addicting? I’ve never played it, maybe I should give it a shot.
So overall hits and misses are expected, but when SNL “hits” it truly delivers. So check out some of the skits I thought were funny from last night’s episode with Katy Perry.
