So, two things are true: Mos Def is now to be referred to as Yasiin Bey, and Black Star is making a comeback! The amazing hip-hop duo stopped by “The Colbert Report” a couple of days ago and discussed their new album, Mos Def’s name change, and then knocked it out of park with their new song “Fix Up.”
The title of the song is perhaps a reference to Dizzee Rascals classic “Fix Up, Look Sharp.” But of course the duo puts their own spin on “fixing up” and deliver some solids rhymes that are hip-hop at its best. They even discuss how they feel about being labeled as “underground hip-hop” and joke with Colbert about the “difference” between commercial and underground hip-hop.
I’m glad that the duo is working on a new album and I’m not even hating on the name change. Yasiin Bey (AKA Mos Def) will always be one of my favorite rappers, an amazing actor, and he will always be Ford Prefect from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Every time I read that book I keep thinking of the movie and cracking up at Mos Def portraying Ford. I usually don’t like when rappers attempt to act, but he does a great job at acting.
If you love Black Star, then be sure to pass this video around and get accustomed to saying Yasiin Bey instead of Mos Def. It’s going to take some time for me to get used to, but it’s all good in the name of hip-hop. At least he didn’t change his style and try to take on a “commercial sound.” But whether an artist is “commercial” or “underground,” the only thing that really matters is the talent, the beat, and the overall message. That is what counts at the end of the day. And if the message isn’t worth crap, then at least it has a good beat we can shake our butts to and have a blast dancing to. Ah, the power of music…gotta love it!
